ED teaching 23 October 19
Our sepsis redux extravaganza was a great success.
Case based discussions:
Will MacDonald kicked off the morning with a case discussion involving an unexpected finding of severe anaemia in a frequently presenting person whose usual phenotype was an atypical pain syndrome.
Elise presented a pneumonia case with a twist -> pH 7.50, hyponatraemia, and a mild hepatitis. This led to a discussion about manifestations of atypical pathogens.

Tom talked about volume of distributions and how we should give big generous doses of first-dose antibiotics in the septic patient.
Sinead takes out the prize for best slide deck with her awesome presentation on fluid management in sepsis.
Simulation involved a patient with a dental abscess gone wrong, with a pH <6.8, severe hyperK, and altered mental status. The case was extremely challenging and we all agree in the value of sweating in training to make real resus’ just a bit easier.
Tom gives himself the prize for best dressed.
